Every year, Canadians raise a glass to celebrate the country’s rich beer culture. Held on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Canadian Beer Day recognizes the social and economic contributions of Canada’s beer industry. From local breweries and pubs to backyard barbecues, it’s a day to celebrate community, craftsmanship, and the people behind the beer.
For Canadian Beer Day 2025, Beer Canada set out to refresh the event’s visual identity under the theme: “A Beverage Like No Other.” Brand & Mortar led the creative direction and crafted a cohesive, flexible brand system, from concept to website design, that honored the event’s history while giving it a fresh, contemporary feel.
Research & Creative Foundation
The starting point for this year’s identity was a commissioned poster by Canadian artist Jeannie Pham. This illustration became the cornerstone for the visual system, inspiring colour, style, and composition.
We developed three design concepts to share with the client, each distinct from last year’s branding but staying true to the Canadian Beer Day identity and connected to the poster’s design. We drew from 2025 design trend insights, including Minimalist Maximalism, playful compositions, and modular geometric systems, incorporating them selectively to ensure a cohesive and dynamic visual story.
The colour palette was also refined, expanding from the poster’s primary tones to an eight-colour system that balanced vibrancy with versatility. This palette guided applications across digital and print assets, from social graphics to merchandise.
Concept Development
Three initial concepts were presented to the client:
Concept 1: Expanded the poster’s illustrative style with new graphics reflecting Canadian landscapes and landmarks. These illustrations could become patterns, stickers, or decorative elements across the website and promotional materials.
Concept 2: Introduced a flexible abstract system using geometric shapes and grids. This concept allowed vector graphics, textures, and cropped imagery to integrate seamlessly across applications, offering both structure and playfulness.
Concept 3: Focused on illustrative graphics, emphasizing storytelling through outlines and selective colour while minimizing photography. This concept strayed the farthest from the original poster in terms of overall look and feel, though key illustrations would be pulled directly from the poster and adapted to maintain a visual connection.

Each concept explored a unique way of translating the poster into a full brand identity. Mockups demonstrated how the designs could function across social, print, and web applications, helping the client envision the potential of each approach.
Refinement
The client selected Concept 2 for its adaptability while incorporating illustrative elements from Concept 1. From there, we refined the system to ensure consistency and flexibility across all applications. This included introducing a secondary heading font inspired by the poster’s typography, defining colour use with dark green and brown backgrounds for depth, thoughtfully integrating the poster as both a hero visual and modular element, and refining imagery and grids to create balanced layouts. The client responded enthusiastically, noting that the refreshed identity felt both new and true to the Canadian Beer Day brand, with darker backgrounds, a lively yet mature tone, and subtle nods to the poster standing out as key strengths.

Bringing the Brand to Life
The final identity system was applied across a range of touchpoints, including the website, social media, and promotional materials. The website featured the poster as the hero element, supported by modular grids and geometric details. Social and email assets used flexible layouts to adapt to various messages while maintaining a consistent visual language. Promotional items—like postcards, glassware, and coasters—balanced the poster illustration on one side with the new graphic elements on the other, extending the identity beyond digital channels. The result was a cohesive, adaptable system that reinforced the event’s theme across every medium.
